A host of local celebrities gathered today at the Liberty Stadium, Swansea to launch nominations for the 2009 Swansea Bay Young Achiever Awards, sponsored by gas distribution company Wales & West Utilities.

Attending the event to kick off proceedings was Swans manager Roberto Martinez accompanied by 18 year old first team player Joe Allen, and Badger & Emma from 96.4FM The Wave’s Breakfast Show.

The Awards present a unique opportunity to celebrate and reward the achievements of young people and recognise the contribution they make to their communities through business, training, education and voluntary work. Categories include Business, World of Work, Community, Young Enterprise Company and new for 2009, The Creative Award.

Short listed finalists from these categories will attend a celebration evening to receive their awards and to find out who has won the overall title of “Swansea Bay Young Achiever of the Year 2009”.

The awards evening will be hosted by Badger & Emma from 96.4FM The Wave, on Friday 5th June 2009 at the Margam Orangery, Port Talbot. Entries are invited from young people between the ages of 14-30 (as at 5th June 2009), who live, work or run a business within the Swansea Bay area, i.e. Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Carmarthenshire.

Graham Edwards, Chief Executive for Wales & West Utilities, the event’s main sponsors commented at the launch “We are proud to once again be sponsoring this worthwhile event.  The awards provide an opportunity for young people to be truly recognised for the incredible work they do – which often goes unnoticed.  By celebrating young people we hope to inspire a new generation to make a real difference in our society”.
